IBM Machine Type

Also known as: machine type, IBM hardware type, IBM model type

An IBM machine type is a numeric hardware identifier used to identify an IBM system family, model class, service path, and compatible parts.

An IBM machine type is the four-digit identifier IBM assigns to a hardware product family, paired with a model code to identify a specific system. It is one of the key identifiers used across IBM hardware sales, service, inventory, and support.

For IBM Power Systems, the machine type is what lets a reseller confirm:

  • The system family
  • Service options
  • Compatible upgrades
  • Replacement parts
  • Maintenance coverage
  • Migration path
