IBM Power System

Also known as: IBM Power Systems, Power System, Power Systems, IBM Power server

An IBM Power System is a single IBM Power server used to run IBM i, AIX, Linux, or mixed workloads through logical partitions.

IBM Power System is the current umbrella name for IBM's POWER-processor server line. In AS400 and IBM i environments the phrase usually points to the hardware layer that replaced the earlier AS400, iSeries, and System i naming.

A current IBM Power System may run IBM i production partitions, AIX workloads, Linux workloads, or a mix of all three under PowerVM logical partitioning.

For a buying decision, the useful next step is mapping the phrase to specifics:

  • Model class
  • Workload size
  • Operating system version
  • Storage requirement
  • Maintenance plan
  • Migration path

See IBM Power for the platform history and Power 11 models for current hardware.
