iSeries
Also known as: AS400, IBM System i, IBM i
The name IBM used for the AS400 platform from 2000 to 2006, when it ran on POWER4 and POWER5 processors. Now superseded by the IBM i on Power branding.
iSeries was the brand name IBM used for the AS400 platform from 2000 through 2006. The iSeries generation introduced POWER4 and later POWER5 processor-based hardware, significantly expanding the platform's performance. The operating system was renamed i5/OS to reflect the POWER5 generation. From an application compatibility standpoint, iSeries was fully backward compatible with AS400 applications written for OS/400. In 2006, IBM briefly renamed the platform IBM System i as part of a broader systems portfolio consolidation, and in 2008 the current IBM i on Power naming was adopted. IT professionals familiar with iSeries terminology will find the current IBM i 7.5 environment architecturally familiar, with modern additions including open-source tooling, REST API support, and cloud integration capabilities.
