IBM FlashSystem is IBM's family of external all-flash and hybrid-flash storage arrays, refreshed in February 2026 with agentic AI and a new FlashCore Module generation.

IBM FlashSystem is IBM's family of external all-flash and hybrid-flash storage arrays, built on IBM Storage Virtualize and commonly attached to Power, IBM i, and AS400 environments as external SAN storage. It usually enters the conversation once internal DASD runs into one of three limits:

  • Capacity ... internal DASD is full, or close enough that growth becomes the problem.
  • Disk busy percentage ... the spindles are the bottleneck, not the processor.
  • Backup windows ... nightly saves no longer finish inside the window.

In February 2026 IBM refreshed all three tiers around FlashCore Module Gen 5 (FCM5) and a new agentic AI layer marketed as FlashSystem.ai:

Plenty of older arrays are still running in production, and most research on them ends up as migration planning toward the current generation:

IBM FlashSystem 5000 Series

The FlashSystem 5000 series is IBM's entry storage tier. The current model is the FlashSystem 5600:

  • Machine type ... 5127-A20
  • Form factor ... 1U, built on FCM5
  • Effective capacity ... up to 2.5 PB
  • Performance ... up to 2.6 million IOPS
  • Aimed at ... edge sites, remote offices, and smaller IBM i environments

It replaced the FlashSystem 5300 (4662-7H2) in February 2026. Older 5000-series members still in the installed base:

IBM FlashSystem 7000 Series

The FlashSystem 7000 series is IBM's mid-range tier for consolidated environments. The current model is the FlashSystem 7600:

  • Machine type ... 5075-A30
  • Form factor ... 2U, built on FCM5
  • Effective capacity ... up to 7.2 PB
  • Performance ... up to 4.3 million IOPS

It replaced the FlashSystem 7300 (machine type 4657-924), which IBM moved to end of marketing on June 30, 2026. Buyers still researching the 7300 by its machine type should treat new quotes as availability-dependent and compare directly against the 7600. IBM FlashSystem 9000 Series

The FlashSystem 9000 series is IBM's enterprise flagship tier for business-critical workloads like ERP, banking, and AI. The current model is the FlashSystem 9600:

  • Machine type ... 5078-A40
  • Form factor ... 2U, built on FCM5
  • Effective capacity ... up to 11.8 PB
  • Performance ... up to 6.3 million IOPS

IBM FlashSystem AI

FlashSystem.ai is IBM's agentic AI layer for the current-generation 5600, 7600, and 9600 arrays, announced in February 2026. It is trained on tens of billions of data points and is designed to automate storage management decisions, adapting to application behavior in hours rather than relying on static, pre-configured templates. IBM states it can cut manual storage management effort by up to 90 percent, and it triggers automatic Safeguarded Copy snapshots for autonomous threat response when it detects abnormal, ransomware-like activity. IBM FlashSystem Grid

FlashSystem Grid architecture is IBM's term for how current FlashSystem arrays coordinate resilience across a deployment. It wires four things together as one layer:

  • Safeguarded Copy ... immutable snapshots a compromised account cannot alter or delete.
  • Replication ... flexible data movement between arrays for site resilience.
  • Real-time threat detection ... watching for I/O patterns consistent with ransomware.
  • Autonomous response ... isolating and starting recovery without waiting on an administrator.

FlashCore Module (FCM)

FlashCore Module is IBM's custom NVMe flash drive, not a third-party SSD, and it's what differentiates FlashSystem from a generic all-flash array. The current generation, FCM5, is exclusive to the FlashSystem 5600, 7600, and 9600. It adds three things over the previous generation:

  • Embedded AI for ransomware detection at the drive level.
  • Quantum-safe encryption.
  • QLC NAND engineered to perform at TLC levels.
