iSeries searches often come from teams running the same business applications they have depended on for years. The name may be old, but the environment is usually active, important, and expensive to disrupt. A server refresh should be planned around continuity first.

Why iSeries refresh projects get delayed

Many teams delay refresh work because the system is stable. Stability is valuable, but hardware age, unsupported operating system levels, shrinking parts availability, and retiring staff can turn a stable environment into a fragile one. The right refresh plan reduces that risk without forcing unnecessary application replacement.

Map the current environment

Before asking for quotes, capture IBM i version, machine type, serial number, processor and memory usage, disk layout, tape and backup process, connected applications, printer and device dependencies, scheduled jobs, HA or replication tools, and vendor support requirements.

Choose the refresh pattern

Some teams move directly to current Power 11 hardware. Others use Power 10 or refurbished Power 9 as a bridge. The right choice depends on support runway, budget, application requirements, and the expected life of the refreshed environment.

Do not ignore backup and recovery

A refresh is the right time to review backup windows, restore testing, offsite copies, disaster recovery, and ransomware isolation. New hardware can improve performance, but it does not automatically make the recovery process reliable.
